Im Nordwesten Englands, an der Mündung des Flusses Mersey in die Irische See, liegt eine Stadt, deren Mythos über Generationen hinweg ungebrochen ist und die bis heute Millionen von Menschen den Soundtrack ihres Lebens liefert: Mit „Ferry Cross the Mersey“, „Penny Lane“ und „Relax“ sind nur einige dieser Songs in die Geschichte eingegangen, und spätestens bei „You’ll Never Walk Alone“ und „Whole Again” fühlen sich Jung wie Alt gleichsam abgeholt. Es ist eine Stadt, deren Geschichte vom Aufstieg und Fall einer Seefahrts- und Handelsmetropole, von der Geburtsstadt des Merseybeats und der wohl berühmtesten vier Söhne der Welt, von Triumphen und Tragödien in Sport und Spiel erzählt und die nicht zuletzt als Ort einer pulsierenden, aufstrebenden kreativen Szene Standards setzt: Liverpool, UNESCO City of Music und ehemalige Kulturhauptstadt Europas – und der kreative Nabel Nordwest-Englands. Genau hier verbergen sich ungeahnte und zum Teil (noch) unbekannte Talente, die es wert sind, über die Landesgrenzen hinaus gesehen und gewürdigt zu werden.
Die Kunsthalle Lüneburg in der KulturBäckerei widmet sich in einer großen Ausstellung vom 16. Oktober bis 10. Dezember 2023 den überraschenden Facetten der Metropole im County Merseyside – allen voran der „Mersey Side of ART“ als thematischen Schwerpunkt: 13 talentierte Liverpooler Kunstschaffende– von Newcomerinnen bis zu etablierten Künstlern – präsentieren ihre Werke in den Bereichen Pop-Art, Collage, Fotografie, Siebdruck, Illustration, Malerei, Holzhandwerk und Videokunst. Jede und jeder von ihnen hat eine ganz eigene Handschrift und Geschichte zu erzählen, aber alle zusammen stehen für das enorme kreative Potenzial, das der Stadt am Mersey innewohnt.
Um dieses Potenzial zu verstehen, braucht es gleichzeitig ein Verständnis für die Stadt – was zeichnet Liverpool aus, was war und ist die Stadt, woher nehmen die Kreativschaffenden ihre Ideen und Inspirationen? Auf diese Fragen will die Ausstellung mit vier weiteren Themenblöcken als Rahmen um die Kunst Antworten geben:
Im Bereich CITY erwartet die Besuchenden eine Einführung in die Stadt mit ihren Eigenschaften und Sehenswürdigkeiten. Der historische Abriss ist überschaubar, dafür soll die Neugierde mit überraschenden Facts geweckt werden. Der Themenblock SPORTS widmet sich neben Reitsport und Golf insbesondere den legendären Fußballstadtrivalen FC Liverpool und FC Everton und erklärt unter anderem, was eine lilafarbene Mülltonne mit dem Versuch einer Fanfreundschaft zu tun hat. RIVER bildet einen weiteren Themenbereich: Warum die Titanic bedeutend für Liverpool ist und wie der große Künstler Sir Peter Blake mit dem Mersey River zusammenhängt, können die Besuchenden hier erfahren. Das Thema MUSIC rundet den Ausstellungsrahmen schließlich mit Einblicken in die legendäre Musikszene Liverpools ab: Den Beatles über Frankie Goes to Hollywood bis OMD, den Liverbirds, Atomic Kitten, Mel C und vielen weiteren Künstler:innen wird hier Tribut gezollt. Ob bekannt oder unbekannt – hier wird (fast) alles gezeigt, was die Stadt seit der Geburt des Merseybeats hervorgebracht hat.
Liverpool – The Mersey Side of Art and Play ist eine Hommage an die Stadt in Merseyside und bildet sie so ab, wie sie ist: vielfältig, unkonventionell, experimentell, kreativ, laut und modern. Die Ausstellung soll neugierig machen, ein (Lebens-)Gefühl vermitteln und ist ein leichter Spaziergang durch eine legendäre englische Stadt.
Die teilnehmenden Künstler:innen sind: Anna Mulhearn, David Knopov, Emily Lansley aka GloMoth, Francesco Mellina, Howard & Honey Storey (Storeybookland), Joana de Oliveira Guerreiro, Johanna Wilson, Laura Brownhill, Laura Spark, Mark McNulty, The Doctor Captain und Will Sergeant.
Die Ausstellungseröffnung findet am Sonntag, den 15. Oktober 2023 um 15 Uhr statt. Mit einem DJ-Set von Emily Lansley (Mitglied der Band Stealing Sheep), einer Live-Performance von Großbritanniens erfolgreichstem Frank Sinatra-Imitator und Künstler David Knopov und einem besonderen Gast: Brian Nash, Gitarrist der Band Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

In the north-west of England, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea, lies a city whose myth has lived on for generations and to this day provides millions of people, both young and old alike, with the soundtrack to their lives: “Ferry Cross the Mersey”, “Penny Lane” and “Relax” along with “You'll Never Walk Alone” and “Whole Again” are just some of the songs that have gone down in history and evoke a feeling of nostalgia for the city.
Liverpool is a city with a diverse history, from the rise and fall of a maritime and trading metropolis, to the birthplace of Merseybeat (and probably the most famous four sons in the world), along with triumphs and tragedies in sport. The city has evolved into a vibrant cultural and leisure destination; awards such as UNESCO City of Music in 2015 and European Capital of Culture in 2008 have transformed it into the creative hub of Northwest England it is today. It is here where up-and-coming talents have emerged, all of whom are worthy of being seen and appreciated beyond the country's borders.
The Kunsthalle Lüneburg in the KulturBäckerei is devoting a major exhibition to the fascinating features of this metropolis in the County of Merseyside, focusing primarily on the “Mersey Side of ART”. From 16 October to 10 December 2023, thirteen talented Liverpool creatives – from newcomers to established artists – present their works in the fields of pop art, collage, photography, screen printing, illustration, painting, wood craft and video art. Each one has a unique signature and story to tell, but united they represent the enormous creative excellence inherent in the city on the River Mersey.
In order to perceive Liverpool’s creative potential, an understanding of the city is also necessary: What distinguishes Liverpool? What is its history and how has the city transformed and developed? Where do the creative people take their ideas and inspirations from? The exhibition provides this additional information using four themes as a framework for the art: CITY, SPORTS, RIVER and MUSIC. In the CITY section, visitors are introduced to Liverpool’s characteristics and sights with the aim to spark one’s curiosity in the city. The SPORTS theme is devoted in particular to the city’s two legendary football teams, Liverpool FC and Everton FC, and presents interesting facts such as how a purple dustbin attempted to unite rival fans. This theme also covers the lesser-known facts of the city’s links to equestrian sports and golf. The RIVER section explains the importance of the Titanic in the history of Liverpool and tells of how the great artist Sir Peter Blake is connected to the River Mersey. Finally, the MUSIC theme rounds off the exhibition with insights into Liverpool's legendary music scene. Tributes are paid to the Beatles, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, OMD, the Liverbirds, Atomic Kitten, Mel C and many other artists. Whether known or unknown, (almost) everything the city has produced since the birth of Merseybeat is showcased here.
Liverpool – The Mersey Side of Art and Play is a tribute to the Merseyside city and portrays it in its true colours: diverse, unconventional, experimental, creative, loud and modern. The exhibition aims to arouse interest in the life and culture of this legendary city and convey the feeling of a leisurely stroll through its streets.
The participating artists are: Anna Mulhearn, David Knopov, Emily Lansley aka GloMoth, Francesco Mellina, Howard & Honey Storey (Storeybookland), Joana de Oliveira Guerreiro, Johanna Wilson, Laura Brownhill, Laura Spark, Mark McNulty, The Doctor Captain and Will Sergeant.
The vernissage will take place on Sunday 15 October 2023 at 3pm. Featuring a DJ set by Emily Lansley (member of the band Stealing Sheep), a live performance by the UK’s most successful Frank Sinatra impersonator and artist David Knopov, and a special guest: Brian Nash, guitarist of the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
An exhibition in collaboration with the Maritime Museum/National Museums Liverpool and the Royal Liverpool Golf Club.
